Construction Progress
New Dorms Rising!
The two new dormitories located on North Elm Street adjacent to Choate’s varsity baseball are truly taking shape. One can now see the expansive courtyard and the framework of individual rooms and apartments. Roof trusses have been installed and the dormitory to the north now has windows and exterior brick is being installed. The buildings are scheduled to be weather-tight and heated by the end of December 2007 and are scheduled to open in fall 2008.
The dormitories, which will house 80 students and eight faculty families, are the first new dormitories in nearly 40 years. These dorms will allow the school to replace outdated residences, significantly improving the quality of student and faculty housing on campus. Rebecca Tenney Agnew ’27, the lead donor, bequeathed the seed money in her will for the new dormitories.

The Bruce ’45 and Lueza Gelb Track
Bruce ’45 and Lueza Gelb P’72, ’74 ,’76 and ’78, lead donors of An Opportunity to Lead: the Campaign for Choate Rosemary Hall, along with former track and field Olympians, were present at the dedication of the new Bruce '45 and Lueza Gelb Track and Field Facility on Saturday, May 19, 2007. Distinguished guests at the ceremony included Otis Davis, winner of two Gold medals in the 1960 Summer Olympics in the 400 meters and the 4 x 400 meter relay; James E. Fuchs, Bronze medalist in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, and a Gold medalist in the shot put and discus in the first Pan American Games in 1951; Hartford’s Lindy J. Remigino, winner of two Gold medals in the 100 meter and 4x100 meter relay in the 1952 Olympics; and Victor Frank, member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Team and a member of U.S. teams that toured Scandinavia in 1949 and Japan in 1951, and the national record holder in discus from 1951-1952. The National Anthem was sung by trained opera singer and professional model Mrs. Nikisha Pitter Alcindor ’96.
Choate’s new track and field facility will have an enormous impact on Choate's athletics program. Construction on this project began in June 2006, when the school’s old cinder track was demolished. The new track has vast features: an all-weather, 8-lane synthetic running track enclosed in a new grass field, a new storage building for high jump and pole vault mats, and other track and field equipment has been constructed. New state-of-the-art “spectator friendly” bleachers are being designed with a viewing area on the eastern slope between the track and throwing areas. New equipment has also been purchased for the facility, including, but not limited to, new hurdles, benches and track gates.
